DU to expel 7 BCL men for torturing student

The disciplinary committee of Dhaka University on Monday recommended expulsion of seven leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Salimullah Muslim Hall unit in different terms for brutally torturing Ehsan Rafiq, a second year student of disaster management and science department, as he demanded back his calculator.

Among them Omar Faruk, second year student of marketing department also assistant secretary of BCL hall unit was recommended to expel permanently from the university.

Samiul Islam Sami of sociology department also BCL member of the hall unit, Ahsanullah of philosophy department also member on the hall unit BCL, Ruhul Amin of Mass Communication and Journalism department also assistant secretary of BCL hall unit, Mehedi Hasan Himel of Urdu department also assistant secretary of BCL hall unit and Fardin Ahmed of Public Administration department also assistant secretary of the hall committee were recommended to be expelled for two years.

The Chhatra League’s hall committee vice-president also fourth year student of Institute of Education and Research Ariful Islam was recommended to be expelled for one year.

Confirming the recommendation, university proctor Golam Rabbani said the decision was taken in a disciplinary committee meeting held on Monday noon with university vice-chancellor M Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

Rabbani also said that the connection of the convicted students was proved by the Salimullah Muslim hall’s investigative body.

Now the fate of these students would be finalised in the syndicate meeting which is scheduled to be held on Tuesday as the disciplinary committee were preparing to forward the recommendation to the highest executive bodies that exercise administrative and supervisory control on academic, administrative and management activities, added Golam Rabbani.

The convicted BCL leaders also expelled from their hall permanently, said Rabbani.

Earlier on February 6, Chhatra League activists of Salimullah Muslim hall beat up Ehsan Rafiq allegedly for demanding back his calculator leaving him now barely to see with the right eye.---newagebd
